Today I am going to share one of my favorite health tips with you. Lemon water! Every morning I cut a fresh organic lemon in half, squeeze it into a large pitcher and add room temperate, purified water. I drink the entire pitcher (1.5 pints) in about 20 minutes. Here's why...
- CLEANSE - Lemon juice is a natural diuretic. Drinking it will help flush out any toxins, free radicals or mucus that may be trapped your digestive tract from the day before. It also kills bad bacteria while preventing its build up. Lemons relieve bloating, gas, indigestion, heartburn and cramping. Ladies, drinking lemon water during "that time of the month" has been shown to ease pain and help decrease the flow of excessive menstruation.
- AIDES THE LIVER - When you drink lemon water you help your body liquify and remove bile, uric acid and other harmful waste by-products. Lemon juice supports liver function by enhancing and strengthening liver enzymes. Had a little too much fun at the bar with your friends this weekend? Drink lots of lemon water. Your liver will thank you.
- MICRONUTRIENTS - Lemons are little bundles of vitamin C. It is a great way to build up your immune system. They are also packed full of potassium which helps your heart beat. Lemon water may be very beneficial to people with high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, high cholesterol and heart failure. Fun fact! Many mammals create their own vitamin C. Humans and some primates have lost this ability and must obtain it from other sources.
- BALANCE pH - Lemons are often thought of as acidic because of their citric acid however the overall nutrient composition of the lemon make it very alkaline. This helps balance your pH. Coffee, meat, environmental factors such as air and water pollution, etc leave many humans on the acid side of the pH scale. If you are too acidic you are basically rotting from the inside out. Sounds ugly, right?
- WEIGHT LOSS - Do not be surprised if you start to lose that stubborn excess body fat. Lemons increase you metabolic rate, allowing you to burn more calories and store less fat. They slow down the rate at which you digest starchy foods, keeping your blood sugar balanced thus reducing the risk of insulin resistance also know as the onset of diabetes.
